Aerial Photography

The first photographs ever takenfrom the air were captured from a hot air balloon by French balloonist and photographer Gaspard-Félix Tournachon over Paris, France. However, as these photographs have been lost to time, the earliest extant aerial photos avaliable are those of American photographer James Wallace Black, taken with the aid of balloonist Samuel Archer King over Boston, Massachusetts in 1860. As the originals of these daguerreotypes have also been lost, only a photo copy from the early 20th century is extant.
